WASHINGTON (AP) — An Albanian immigrant says the Justice Department reneged on a promise to protect him and his family in exchange for his testimony against a reputed mobster indicted for running a human smuggling ring.
The government is planning to deport the wife and eldest son of Edmond Demiraj (DEH'-meh-rye) to Albania, where Demiraj says — and Justice agrees — they would be in danger of violence at the hands of the mobster.
Demiraj is a Houston-area house painter who agreed in 2001 to testify against Bill Bedini, who was indicted on smuggling charges. For his cooperation, Demiraj says a federal prosecutor promised him a life in the United States and protection for his family.
When Bedini fled the U.S. before his trial, the government had no need of Demiraj's help.
