Fed: Helen Bayes wins Human Rights Medal

HELEN BAYES has been rewarded the 1999 Human Rights Medal for her work on child labour,
juvenile justice and sexual exploitation.

The 54-year-old founder and national coordinator of Defence for Children International
in Australia, has received the prize at the 1999 Human Rights Medals and Awards ceremony
in Sydney.

She is a mother of two birth children, two adopted children and the grandmother of two children.

Former recipients of the Human Rights Medal include eye surgeon FRED HOLLOWS and indigenous
land rights activist EDDIE MABO.

The Human Rights Youth Medal was awarded for the first time at this year's ceremony.
